If you have been swimming and competing for a while you will know the excitement that comes with buying yourself a new wetsuit. The smell of neoprene and the anticipation of a new PB lingering in the air. But all too often, swimmers are left disappointed by the fit of their new wetsuit or by its performance in the water. We've taken the guess work out of it and provided a detailed buyers guide for the top wetsuits available today!

Top Performing Triathlon Wetsuits Overview

  1. Best Mid Level Triathlon Wetsuit - Orca Apex Float Wetsuit - A seriously comfortable wetsuit to compete in that offers enhanced buoyancy around the hips and legs. Anyone training for their next triathlon would be happy in this wetsuit. Due to its buoyancy profile, we feel this wetsuit is more geared towards male swimmers than female.

  2. Best Top Level Triathlon Wetsuit - Orca Apex Flow Wetsuit - Freedom of movement redefined. This wetsuit performs so well its actually pretty hard for us to get hold of in store! That should tell you something. Speed and flexibility go hand in hand which makes for a comfortable PB setting wetsuit. One thing to note for potential customers, this wetsuit is delicate. Its comprised using high performance materials so you must take care of this wetsuit or it wont last long.

  3. Best Value For Money Triathlon Wetsuit - Orca Athlex Float - Crazy good wetsuit for the price that uses premium materials often seen on higher end models across brands. A great starter wetsuit for anyone getting into triathlon or even looking to upgrade. Durability is up for debate but if you take your time putting the suit on you won't have any problems.

  4. Cutting Edge Award - Zone3 Aspire Triathlon Wetsuit - We were sceptical at first as biodegradable neoprene (B-prene) sounds like a nightmare just waiting to happen, however the jury is in, its a great wetsuit that doesn't fall to bits! Super flexible and comfortable, Zone3 look to have paved the way for a new era of sustainability within the triathlon and open water swimming scene.

The Best Tri Wetsuits Tested & Reviewed With Customer Feedback Considered

Orca Apex Flow, top end triathlon wetsuit back image.

Orca Apex Flow Triathlon Wetsuit - £749

Buy My Apex Flow Wetsuit

Designed with top triathletes, Ironman or T100 athletes in mind, the Orca Apex flow wetsuit redefines the term flexibility. If you are a regular lake or sea swimmer you will have heard at some point during a grizzly morning swim someone utter the phrase "wetsuits are not for me, they are too restrictive around my shoulders" Not this wetsuit. Its as close to a second skin as possible and performs incredibly well.

I can recall one regular customer of ours at Shepperton Open Water Swim, known to many as Irish Colin, a truly seasoned triathlete, purchased this wetsuit after utilising our "Try Before You Buy" system . He achieved an almost 4 minute PB compared to his current Zone3 Vanquish. Mind you, this did have some bullet holes which would have been slowing him down.

Pro's

  • Personal Best Setter - This wetsuit will make you faster unless you are doing something wrong...

  • Sleek and Aesthetic - Some wetsuits make you feel like you can uppercut a shark and this is one of them. The Gunmetal features display on the back of the wetsuit as well as the bubble like texture down the arms makes it an awesome looking suit.

  • Flexibility Unmatched - You simply wont find a better balanced and flexible wetsuit.

Con's

  • Incredibly Pricey - On the topic of feeling great and powerful in this wetsuit, you will need to dawn it and rob a bank to afford the mortgage for the rest of the year.

  • Seriously Delicate - If you are heavy handed with your swim gear this may not be the wetsuit for you. It does need to be treated with care due to its highly technical materials.

Zoggs Hypex Ultra FS Triathlon Wetsuit

Zoggs Hypex Ultra Triathlon Wetsuit - £700

Buy My Hypex Ultra Here

The pinnacle of the new Zoggs Hypex Neutral Buoyancy range, the Hypex Ultra offers its user incredible flexibility throughout the entirety of the wetsuit due to its complete construction of Yamamoto 40 neoprene. The Hypex Ultra has been a breath of fresh air for swimmers looking for a more minimalistic buoyancy profile and for those who want a more natural swimming experience. Its muscular striation design has proven popular and is a real stand out at open water swimming venues and triathlon events across the UK. Its quickly become our secret weapon to turn lifelong wetsuit haters to wetsuit lovers.

Pro's

  • Second Skin - Yamamoto 40 neoprene makes this wetsuit incredibly flexible around the entire upper body making for a free feeling swim.

  • Neutral Buoyancy - In a world dominated by buoyancy enhanced wetsuits the Zoggs Hypex Ultra offers an awesome alternative and has proved very popular with both male and female swimmers.

  • Customisable Cuffs - Zoggs unique custom cuffs design allows the swimmer to alter the legs and arms on their wetsuit to achieve a better fit. If you are someone who wears a Polar or Garmin sports watch this is amazing as you can tailor one cuff shorter to allow for this to be on display.

Con's

  • YKK Reverse Zip System - Whilst some find this a great addition to the wetsuit as it offers additional flexibility benefits and speed in transition, most swimmers dont have the flexibility required to do this wetsuit up by themselves - We do hear whispers that zoggs will correct this in their newer models expected in 2027.

  • Heavy Graphics - Like all wetsuits, the more graphics on the suit the more potential for them to peel and crack and this is the case with the Hypex Ultra towards the end of its life.

Zone3 Aspire Wetsuit - Men's

Zone3 Aspire Triathlon Wetsuit - £549

Buy My Zone3 Aspire Here

The Zone3 Aspire has always received incredibly good testing feedback since its inception over 15 years ago! Upgrading on average every two years, the Aspire kept getting better and better so when we heard that Zone3 planned on replacing traditional Yamamoto neoprene with B-prene (a new form of biodegradable neoprene) we were pretty skeptical. Visions of hoards of swimmers approaching the shop like zombies with their wetsuits degrading and falling of them filled our thoughts, but this was not to be. They have truly broken the mould with this wetsuit and look to be paving the way to a new, greener and more sustainable wetsuit industry.

Pro's

  • Sustainability - In an industry that is not all together that eco friendly, it's nice to see a wetsuit that is better for the planet without compromising on performance.

  • Multi Directional Flexibility - The Zone3 Aspire offers its users awesome flexibility without requiring super thin neoprene panels due to its new B-prene material. This makes it a great allrounder wetsuit for swimmers who want to training and compete in triathlons during summer but also push through a embrace winter swimming.

  • BRE Body Rotation Enhancement Chest Panel - A Trickle-down feature from our Vanquish wetsuit, stabilises body rotation and maximises forward reach with each stroke, helping you swim further with less effort.

Con's

  • Tight Forearm Panels - The Aspire features sensory catch panels along the forearms designed to increase contact feeling with the water however we feel these do make the arms rather tight. If you are someone with a more muscular build these may feel restrictive.

  • 1% Red - Red has been the colour associated with the Aspire for 15 years and its gone! Not really a negative just preference.

Orca Athlex Flow Triathlon Wetsuit

Orca Athlex Flow Triathlon Wetsuit - £399

Buy My Orca Athlex Flow Here

Sitting at the top of the Orca Athlex range, the Athlex Flow combines flexibility and buoyancy to create a superbly well balanced wetsuit. Often forgotten or overlooked for the Apex range, this wetsuit is good enough for pretty much any swimmer. It doesn’t do anything super special, it just simplicity done well using high quality materials at a reasonable price.

Pro's

  • A combination of Yamamoto 39 neoprene and aerodome panels creates the most balanced wetsuit around. Flexibility combined with buoyancy.

  • Premium Performance At A Mid Level Price Point - This wetsuit could easily retail in the £500's however Orca have kept to a reasonably affordable price point.

Con's

  • Similar Graphics - The design and graphics are very similar to that of the Apex Flow making it pretty difficult to tell the difference sometimes. We would have liked a splash of colour here or there to differentiate, it definitely would make it easier for us in the shop.

  • The Design / Buoyancy Profile Favours Men - Due to the included aerodome panels and the volume of women discovering the benefits on neutral buoyancy wetsuits, it may be too buoyancy for many female wetsuit swimmers.

Zoggs Predator Ultra FS Triathlon Wetsuit

Zoggs Predator Ultra Triathlon Wetsuit - £750

Buy My Predator Ultra Here

Sitting at the top of the new Zoggs Predator range, the Predator Ultra provides an insane amount of buoyancy. Think my wetsuit is canoe type buoyancy and this is most down to the copious amounts of Aerodome throughout the wetsuit. Its been described as a throwback old school style wetsuit by a few of our regular swimmers at Shepperton Swim that focuses on getting you completely flay to the water so you can just focus on pulling and hitting some awesome speed.

Pro's

  • Seriously Buoyant - The Predator Ultra offers pretty much the maximum amount of buoyancy possible, hence the name Ultra.

  • Warm and Comfortable - Due to its 5mm panels, this wetsuit is a great all year round wetsuit. Whilst it can't be considered a thermal wetsuit, it definitely takes the edge off.

  • Less Flexible Than The Hypex Ultra - Whilst the Predator Ultra is a nice and flexible wetsuit, it doesn't feel as free and flexible as its counterpart the Hypex Ultra. This is probably due to its thickness however it would be great if it could achieve the same level.

Orca Athlex Float Triathlon Wetsuit

Orca Athlex Float Triathlon Wetsuit - £249

Buy My Athlex Float Here

Winning the best value for money space is the Orca Athlex Float. It performs like a mid level wetsuit but at an entry level wetsuit price point. Orca have really achieved something with this wetsuit as you will see complete novice swimmers enjoying this wetsuit alongside seasoned Ironman athletes. Its a fantastic first impression of Orca wetsuits if this is your first time buying a wetsuit.

Pro's

  • Incredible Value For Money - The Orca Athlex Float performs like a mid level wetsuit but sits at the entry level price of £249

  • Flexibility Enhanced - Its well known that within the wetsuit industry, the more you pay the more flexible the wetsuit is likely to be and often your cheaper wetsuits are rigid and tight. However, this wetsuit uses a combination of premium Yamamoto 38 & 39 neoprene making it incredibly supple and flexible.

  • High Buoyancy Profile - 4.5mm thick Yamamoto 38 neoprene panels in the hips and legs provide fantastic lift and buoyancy which is great for entry level swimmers who havent achieved a perfect body position in the water yet.

Con's

  • Availability In Season - This wetsuit is often in high demand throughout the season due to the high volume of new swimmers looking for wetsuits below the £250 price point. Its often pretty to get one unless you are quick at the start of the season or if you are one of the less regular sizes.

  • Delicate For New Swimmers - Due to the use of Yamamoto 38 and 39 neoprene, this wetsuit is more delicate to finer nail tears and user error than other entry level wetsuits. Zone3

Zone3 Vanquish X Men's Triathlon Wetsuit

Zone3 Vanquish - X Triathlon Wetsuit

Buy My Zone3 Vanquish X Here

Speed is essential for anyone looking to finish within a competitive time or even podium for their triathlon race and the Zone 3 Vanquish has held the top spot for speed for many years. Every upgrade comes with more speed focused features and tech designed to enhance your race day experience and time and the Vanquish X is no different. The suit features tech like BRS Mark 0.3mm SCS on the sleeves to allow for an ultra lightweight and flexible arm rotation.

Biorubber is the stand out cutting edge technology introduced into this newer model of Zone3 Vanquish. Its an infrared, ray emitting material which collects energy from the atmosphere and re-emits this energy back to the body. Biorubber is proven to increase blood flow, reducing lactic acid and fatigue build up in the legs for more power as soon as you exit the water. Sounds made up if you ask us, but apparently it works and this wetsuit has got great reviews!

Pro's

  • Speed Meets More Speed - This wetsuit is seriously quick and actually has the power to turn an average swimmer into a some what decent swimmer. Its combination of targeted buoyancy panels and and high stretch materials come together in perfect synergy to create blistering speed.

  • Titanium Alpha Lining - Unique to Zone 3, a five-layer structure made up of neoprene rubber, coated with Titanium Alloy, and then laminated with synthetic fibre jerseys. Double lined Titanium alloy neoprene is 40% warmer than regular neoprene, with no negative impact on buoyancy, flexibility or comfort.

Con's

  • Sizing Comes Up Small - Unfortunately it can be a little tough to find the right size for this suit as it comes up smaller than other styles in our experience. If you are considering spending the £700 on a wetsuit its worth seeking out a venue that offers "Try Before You Buy" so you can be fitted by an expert.

  • Durability - This is to be expected of a high end wetsuit that uses Yamamoto 40 and above. Unfortunately, flexibility and durability dont often go hand in hand so you will need to take care when putting your wetsuit on and removing it.

Orca Apex Float Tri Wetsuit

Orca Apex Float Triathlon Wetsuit - £499

Buy My Apex Float Here

This wetsuit wins our best mid level wetsuit prize as its just a phenomenal all rounder, ideal for taking your training and performance to the next level. It offers great buoyancy and flexibility and feels compressive and snug, but in a good way. The graphics are sleek and an upgrade on the rather plan Athlex Float as it now features gunmetal / carbon fibre detailing.

Pro's

  • Thermal Comfort - Thanks to its 3mm thickness in the chest and back and 5mm in the legs, this wetsuit will protect you against cold sea temperatures during the swim stage of your triathlons. It also makes it a great all round wetsuit for swimmers who challenge themselves with winter swimming.

  • Technical Linings - The combination of Infinity Skin 2 linings and Yamamoto 40 neoprene makes this wetsuit super flexible but incredibly comfortable against the skin.

Con's

  • Only For Those Who Need Serious Lift - The clues in the name, this isn't the triathlon wetsuit for you if you can achieve an ok body position without a wetsuit. It gives the user serious lift so take that into consideration before purchasing.

  • Delicate If Not Treated With Respect - As with many of the top end wetsuits listed in this article, with premium flexible material comes great responsibility to not user your finger nails and tear at the wetsuit.
