Spring is just around the corner and you might be thinking about making your first open water swim of the year. Here in the UK, we are blessed with a variety of outdoor swimming options, from purpose-built lidos to remote beauty spots. Here are just some of the venues where you might like to take a cold dip this year!

Shepperton Open Water Swim

Shepperton Lake is on the outskirts of London, and offers 400m and 750m swim courses. These are supervised during the opening hours, which vary according to the seasonal daylight hours. Swim sessions cost just £5 and you will have access to changing facilities with showers and toilets, plus car parking.

The venue also offers coaching sessions, group swims, events, races, and a 1.5km running track.

Coniston Water, Cumbria

If you want more of a challenge, then Coniston Water in Cumbria provides you with five miles of open water to go at! Most swimmers favour the quieter northern end of the lake where there is less boat traffic and gently sloping sides. There are also many open swimming events held throughout the year if you enjoy big group swims.

Llyn Glaslyn, Snowdonia

If you want to enjoy the remote beauty of the North Wales mountains, then the crystalline Lake Glaslyn is the perfect place. Located on the route up Snowdon, athletic types often combine taking a cooling dip with conquering Wales’s highest mountain. Be prepared for very cold temperatures at this time of year.

Blue Lagoon, Pembrokeshire

If you thought that blue lagoons only existed in exotic movie locations, you might be surprised to learn that the UK has its very own blue lagoon in south Wales. The turquoise waters are located in a former quarry pit with a channel leading directly into the sea. Perfect for a safe and tranquil swim.
